Certified Tahoma31 NO-TILL Fairway or Ball field Renovation by the numbers

We have seen Tahoma 31 show promise in choking out and taking over sub-standard Bermuda varieties with it’s thick density and ultra-short internodes (growth points). The full floatation tires on our new 5125R John Deere, coupled with our new 7 ft Sprigger’s choice fairway Sprigger has 3 sets of independent press wheels to plant on curves and contours while maintaining proper planting depth in hard conditions.

5 day schedule of events

Day 1 Spray the turf areas to be planted to Tahom31 with Primo 4X rate at 44 oz per acre, this will stall the existing turf for 3 weeks to give an early grow in window for the new Tahoma31 to take root.

Day 3 Scalp the existing turf to ¼” by means of either a rotary mower, flail mower, or fraze mower. The areas should stay scalped for 3-4 weeks to help the Tahoma31 take root.

Day 4 Triple aerify the field on 4” centers with ½” or 5/8” cores. This will help loosen up the existing turf offering a better planting bed for the Tahoma31 to be planted in.

Day 5 Sprig the fairway or ballfield 2 directions on a 30-degree angle at a pass rate of 600 ga/bu per acre totaling 1,200 ga/bu per acre, this high planting rate will add insurance to the success of the project and speed up the turf conversion. After the second pass, set the irrigation system to water 5 min per zone on the areas that were planted, then we will pass 4 times with our Culti-Crimper to press more growth points into the new field surface. Then turn the water on to water 15 min every 2 hours for 3 weeks. Golf or sports play can resume on the 3-week mark. Tahoma 31 should come up evenly and begin to take the field over, this full conversion can be expected over the course of the next 3-5 years.
